When an oil fired installation is first put into use, it is essential that its main features are checked for safe and efficient operation and that, in particular, its burner is set up to suit site conditions.

For example, the same boiler may  be installed either with a low level flue straight through the wall, or flued to a conventional lined chimney in a tall building.

These will present different conditions for the burner, and commissioning compensates for these to provide the correct conditions to meet the manufacturer's design parameters.

Many manufacturer's guarantees will probably depend on this having been carried out.

A commissioning technician must check the installation and carry out a combustion efficiency test to make sure that operation is up to the high levels expected by the industry and users.

Commissioning checks

Safety of the appliance and controls are checked.

Operating parts such as gauges, filter, valves, fire valves, burner and system controls are examined and put into use where possible.

The appliance is set up in accordance with the manufacturer's commissioning information using calibrated instruments

Results are provided and left on site to provide subsequent technicians of any special adjustments that have been made to deal with site conditions.
